New Freestanding Emergency Department for Norman Regional Health System

Norman Regional Health System prides itself on being “from our community and for our community.” With three main campuses, over 30 clinics and offices, and more than 3000 providers and employees, NRHS provides comprehensive medical care — and a compassionate “bedside manner” — to Oklahomans in Norman, Moore, and surrounding areas. The independent health system is constructing a new freestanding emergency department plus (FSED+) to ensure they meet the evolving needs of the community.  NRHS needed solutions that were as comprehensive, responsive, and seamless as the healthcare services they provide. In 2020, they selected Bremner Real Estate to design, build, and finance four buildings in Norman and Oklahoma, including the FSED+.  Norman Regional Health System: Caring for the Community   With their innovative Inspire Health Plan, Norman Regional Health System is “reimaging healthcare.” The focus is on delivering the highest quality services, promoting health and wellness, and providing care that is accessible and convenient. According to NRHS, “The health system’s overall physical structure must align with how our patients and communities want to receive care.”   Challenges and Opportunities  The new freestanding emergency department [...]

Local Partners: Integral to Healthcare Real Estate Project Success

Bremner Real Estate delivers healthcare real estate solutions from coast to coast; with a reach that spans the country, the Bremner team understands the value of reaching across town. Ron Penix, Vice President, Client Development, says, “In our business, we use the most qualified professionals for the project, the best ‘fit’ with respect to architectural services and so forth. Most of the time, those players are on a regional or even national basis. In the work we do as a healthcare developer, though, some of the most vital partners on our team are local partners.”  Why are local consultants so integral to success?  Healthcare Real Estate: Relationships Matter  Engaging local partners provides access to local relationships. For example, a local civil engineer likely has established connections with the municipality that streamlines ongoing project approvals. Penix explains, “We found that using national firms, without those local relationships, tends to result in more hurdles than when we partner with the ‘small local’ person.” They have an in-depth understanding of the locale, the market, and the processes involved in obtaining permits, securing approvals, etc.  Bremner [...]

Kevin Knue Promoted to Senior Vice President and Named Partner

As a key member of the Bremner Real Estate team, Kevin Knue works seamlessly with both internal and external teams to ensure the highest quality results for clients — and for the communities they serve. He has overseen projects such as the LEED Silver Department of Veterans Affairs Clinic in Tampa, Florida, Indianapolis’s LEED Gold Eskenazi Health Fifth/Third Faculty Office Building, and the four stand-alone hospitals of the SCL-Emerus Community Hospitals system in Denver. These efforts alone encompass collective millions of square feet and multiple specialties from emergency and cancer centers to primary care and women’s wellness. Success isn’t measured in square footage; it’s measured in impact. Healthcare systems and providers will be able to deliver care more effectively and efficiently, and countless patients will benefit from up-to-date, efficient facilities that meet their needs. Kevin says, “The exciting part of my role is that we can use a wide array of skills to help a hospital system implement their vision for new development, and at the end of the day when we deliver the project, the best part is seeing new patients [...]

Five Real Estate Questions Healthcare Professionals Should Be Asking

Healthcare real estate is a fast-paced dynamic world; a strong real estate portfolio is critical in empowering systems and physician groups to achieve the “Holy Trinity” of healthcare. Quality of care, convenience, and cost-effectiveness. Outdated spaces, on the other hand, are a drain on all three, and operational and profitability challenges impact your ability to deliver the exceptional standard of care to which you hold yourself. When investigating opportunities, it is essential to ask some tough questions and dig deep into your current assets, as well as your future goals. Here are five healthcare real estate questions (and a bonus “big” question!) to ask as you start the process: Do our existing real estate assets provide our community with a top-rated healthcare experience?  Healthcare providers and systems need to take an unflinching look at their existing portfolio. Is it meeting their needs? More importantly, is it meeting the needs of those they serve? If not, dig deeper: Why? What’s wrong, and how can we fix it?  There are a number of red flags that indicate a portfolio is not conducive to providing [...]

Bremner Spotlight: Debbie Johnson

The healthcare real estate market must evolve as rapidly as the healthcare industry itself. Today’s providers need flexibility, and they are turning to a convenience care-based model that brings services “off campus” from the hospital, allowing them to reach more people, more conveniently and cost-effectively. This is just one trend, among many, that is driving the industry today. And it is one trend, among many, that Bremner Real Estate’s Vice President of Leasing, Debbie Johnson, tracks, analyzes, and takes into consideration as she brokers real estate transactions for a major healthcare system. Dedicated Healthcare Real Estate Broker There is more than 1.3 billion square feet of healthcare real estate in the United States, and as systems and providers seek to balance care, convenience, and cost - the “Holy Trinity” of healthcare - their needs are only growing. Debbie, a veteran commercial real estate executive, is a dedicated broker for a large health system. Based in Indianapolis, Debbie helps her client navigate the complex world of healthcare real estate and balance those critical needs with agility and efficiency. As a national healthcare system, [...]

Strategy, Financing, Development: An Innovative Perspective in Healthcare Real Estate

One of the largest problems within the delivery of healthcare is aging infrastructure and the buildings themselves fail patients and providers alike. Whether they create compliance issues, simply underperform because of lacking space and equipment, or are in the wrong location, they are a real problem that has only been further exposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Aging infrastructure has made it tough to find enough dedicated facilities in hospitals for COVID-19 care, so many patients flood emergency rooms each day, potentially exacerbating the spread of the virus. COVID-19 has also shown a real demand for additional outpatient facilities to treat affected individuals. The reality is that often new facilities could position entire health systems for better patient care in terms of COVID-19 or the next health pandemic to face people. The Reality of COVID-19 Few responses to the COVID-19 pandemic have been as heroic as those mounted by hospitals and healthcare facilities across the United States. As outbreaks continue to happen, hospitals and health systems have increased testing efforts, worked with what they had to create treatment spaces, and fought to provide [...]
